EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
